While most of us were cozied up at home for a day off last Wednesday, many of the residents and staff at our Carroll House Men's Shelter battled the snow storm. While most residents were able to return to the shelter before the buses stopped running, several had to walk miles in the heavy snow and cold from Silver Spring Metro back to Carroll House. One resident stayed at his work place overnight, where he was responsible for shoveling snow and salting walkways in a residential complex.
Our dedicated staff also worked through the storm, which took out power and phone lines at the shelter for 12 hours. The overnight residential coordinator came in at 5pm to make sure he would be there to cover his 1am shift and the day-time residential coordinator/office administrator spent the night, working again the following morning.
Even with the complications of power and travel, a small group of staff and residents were able to help some members of the local community when their car got stuck in the snow on Linden Lane. Together, staff and clients helped push the car out of the snow, helping to get the couple back home safely.
Working together, the Carroll House residents and staff made it through the storm. So, the next time we all enjoy a snow day, when schools and offices are closed, think of our committed staff who will find a way, any way to make sure they get to work, and to make sure that someone is taking care of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Thank you to our amazing staff in all of our programs.
